The South Shore Shines Through the Snow: Stories, Events & Inspiration
From winter storms and icy ferry commutes to heroic rescues and community kindness, the South Shore is shaking off snow and sliding right into Super Bowl weekend. Locals can warm up with art at The James Library, sip and savor at the Food & Wine Expo, or find fun in workshops and live music across the region. If a late New Year’s resolution is calling your name, runners are gearing up for the scenic Duxbury Half Marathon. With concerts, comedy, and family events filling the calendar, this week has a little something for everyone.
This Week on the South Shore
Headlines
Hingham: Hingham’s commuter ferry is feeling the freeze! Thick ice in the Shipyard harbor has canceled most trips this week, but a New Bedford tugboat and the Coast Guard’s ice-breaking vessel Shackle have kept a few evening runs afloat. Passengers described a magical, Arctic-like commute: Pink sunsets, frozen waves, and even 5-foot snow walls. Right here on the South Shore. - Boston.com & Patriot Ledger
Marshfield: When the snowstorm hit, the Hadfield family of Marshfield opened their home and hearts to Scout, an 8-month-old shih tzu from the Scituate Animal Shelter. The family has fostered many dogs over the years, helping pups stay safe and warm until they find their forever homes. Thanks to families like the Hadfields, even stormy days can have a happy tail ending. - Patriot Ledger
Plymouth: Stranded in a blizzard in Myles Standish State Forest, a post-surgery driver and companion were trapped on a snow-packed road on January 25. Massachusetts Environmental Police, local fire crews, and a pair of Good Samaritans on snowmobiles teamed up to rescue them safely. The vehicle stayed behind, but everyone made it out unscathed. Teamwork wins again in a winter showdown! - NewBedfordGuide
Quincy: Quincy’s own Laurence Louie, chef-owner of Rubato, is bringing some South Shore flavor to Top Chef Season 23! The James Beard semifinalist and “Chopped” champion will compete in the Carolinas for a $250,000 prize, representing New England among 15 top chefs from around the country. Catch the premiere on Bravo Monday, March 9 at 9 p.m. ET. - Boston.com
Scituate: High tides from this weekend’s nor’easter caused flooding and road closures, but with the storm moving off the coast, Scituate’s town crews sprang into action: Cutting channels through snowbanks and draining streets to keep everyone safe. Thanks to their quick work and teamwork, residents stayed secure, power stayed on, and even winter’s worst couldn’t slow the South Shore down! - NBC Boston
Weymouth: From $80 in his pocket to bottles across New England, Vytas Makstutis’ Rustic Spirits has come a long way from his basement in Weymouth. Featured on Made in Mass, his handmade margaritas are now easier than ever to enjoy. Look for twist-top single servings hitting shelves this March! - WCVB
